22 Jan 11 UCLA Bruins Vs. Houston Cougars Football: Live Blog and Instant Analysis

UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince will have to step up his game against Houston tonight.Harry How/Getty ImagesHello, college football fans! Josh Martin, UCLA football featured columnist here. I'll be covering tonight's tilt between the Bruins and westward-traveling Houston Cougars at the Rose Bowl. The Bruins have struggled in their first two games, as indicated by their 0-2 record, and even more so by last week's 35-0 beating at the hands of the Stanford Cardinal...at home, no less.Houston, meanwhile, is back in the rankings after putting a sound whooping on the UTEP Miners, 54-24 last Saturday. The Cougars are certainly favored in this game, especially considering UCLA's performance thus far this season.Stay tuned to see how things shake out in Pasadena! 01:44 AM ETFinal score, UCLA 31, Houston 13. Cleveland Browns jersey
Can't overstate just how important this win is for the program, and coach Neuheisel in particular, after such an abysmal performance last week. Big improvement by the Bruins this week, but still much to be done going forward...and fast. Blue-and-Gold should have some positive momentum heading into Austin next Saturday against the fourth-ranked Texas Longhorns. Thanks for tuning in. I'll be back next week with real-time reactions for the big match-up. 01:40 AM ETHow about neither. Prince takes a knee, so looks like the Bruins are content to let the clock wind down. 01:39 AM ETJones picks up another Bruin first down on a 12-yard run. First-career touchdown to come for Jones, or will Franklin get a shot at his fourth on the night? 01:38 AM ETBruins go for it on fourth-and-one, and convert on a quarterback keeper by Prince. Clock keeps winding, all the way under two minutes remaining now. 01:35 AM ETJones gets another shot at redemption, keeps both hands on the ball, and doesn't fumble. Now, step two. 01:33 AM ETBall to Franklin again, who skis his way out to the Houston 35 for a 26-yard gain. Excellent burst, and good lateral evasiveness. 01:32 AM ETNice, patient run by Franklin on first down for a nine-yard gain. He'll see plenty of action against Texas next week. 01:32 AM ETMorrell Presley fair-catches the short Cougar kick to start UCLA's next drive at the 30. More ground game to come. 01:30 AM ETEdwards makes the catch, but out of bounds. Kevin Sumlin sends his kicking unit onto the field. Matt Hogan punches through a 32-yarder to bring the score to 31-13. Bruins D holds up to preserve a three-score margin. 01:29 AM ETBruins burst the bubble screen to force third-and-11 for the Cougars. 01:25 AM ETHouston starts the drive with an incomplete Broadway pass and a one-yard run, followed by a great pass and an even better run after the catch by Cleveland to get the Cougs back in the red zone. Special thanks to the "tackling" of the UCLA defense. A touchdown here and it's still a game. 01:21 AM ETPrince gets the ball to Marvray for a modest gain on third down, but not enough to avoid a punt. Ball goes back to the Cougars, who will start their next drive with pretty good field position. 01:20 AM ETUCLA picks up holding penalty on second down, Franklin makes up a good chunk on the ground. 01:18 AM ETBruins get the ball back with 11 and a half minutes left, and Jet Ski picks up two yards on first down. Expect the Bruins to keep it on the ground, wind down the clock til the game is officially over. 01:15 AM ETCougars convert on the extra point to narrow the margin to 31-10. Meanwhile, Holmes comes up with another unnecessary late hit and heads straight to the locker room, where he's sure to get an earful from the coaching staff after the gameDallas Cowboys jersey
. Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb...did I mention dumb? 01:13 AM ETBeautiful throw to Cleveland by Broadway in the back of the end zone. Freshman Anthony Jefferson gets burned by the team captain. 01:11 AM ETOn first-and-goal, the Bruins drop Broadway for a big loss. Toughening up in the red zone again. 01:10 AM ETAnother first down for Houston, added onto by a roughing-the-passer call against Damien Holmes. Neuheisel doesn't look to happy, as expected. 01:09 AM ETCougs pick up another first down, with Beall getting the ball inside the Bruins 20. 01:08 AM ETFirst throw for Broadway goes way past his man and out of bounds as he escapes toward the sideline. Third-and-nine for the wide-eyed freshman, and he completes a poorly-covered screen that goes for a first down. Nice composure by the youngster. 01:07 AM ETHouston keeps the ball on the ground, now into Bruin territory with a second-and-9. 01:05 AM ETBroadway, the freshman, picks up five yards on a nice run for a Houston first down. Looks like the future starts now for the Kevin Sumlin and the Cougars. 01:02 AM ETTerrance Broadway in at quarterback for Houston, the fourth guy in for the Cougars thus far. Two running plays to start. Houston will have third-and-three to start the final period. 01:00 AM ETSecond-and-seven for the Bruins. Jones fumbles again. Late-hit by Marvray gives the Cougars another 15 yards. 12:58 AM ETBruins force a fumble. Damien Holmes comes up with it, giving the ball back to the Bruins' offense with spectacular field position (the Houston 16). Credit Larimore for causing the fumble. 12:55 AM ETBruins go three-and-out, all on the ground. Pretty good punt by Jeff Locke, made even better by a block-in-the-back penalty by Houston, but worse by an injury to David Allen. 12:53 AM ETFranklin gets the hand-off, ups his rush total on the evening to 102 yards. Great game for Jet Ski so far. 12:52 AM ETTurner pitches the ball to Hayes for a three-yard gain. Ball back to the Bruins on fourth. Turner's currently getting worked on by the trainers on the sidelines. Another huge blow for the Cougs? 12:51 AM ETHouston starts off the drive in hurry-up mode, with a quick pass for a first down followed by a run for zilch and a pass for six, both wrapped-up well by theDenver Broncos jersey
UCLA D. 12:49 AM ETOn first down, Jet Ski gets the hand-off and cashes it in for his third touchdown of the night. Great blocking up front by the line for the Bruins. UCLA now up HUGE, 31-3. Can't let up now, though. Gotta keep up the effort until the clock is down to double zeroes. 12:47 AM ETDefense steps up again, first with a sack/forced intentional grounding by Ayers, and then an excellent tackle by former walk-on Andrew Abbott. Cougars punt out of their own end zone, and Embree runs the ball inside the 15 on a 31-yard return. Your welcome, Kevin Prince. 12:45 AM ETSheldon Price battles Edwards for the ball downfield. No one comes up with it, but excellent coverage and use of length by Price on the edge. 12:42 AM ETPrince rips off a nice five-yarder, but then throws to high for Barr to pull down. Ball goes back to Houston on the punt. 12:40 AM ETUCLA Band busts out "Sweet Caroline", but Prince isn't so sweet, missing Anthony Barr by a mile. 12:37 AM ETTurner can't get it to Cleveland on a short, third-down route, so Houston will punt the ball off to Embree. The ball bounces into the end zone. Bruins will start at the 20, looking to widen the score board gap. 12:36 AM ETAnother great play by a UCLA youngster. MLB Pat Larimore with a backfield stop on Beall. 12:35 AM ETBeall picks up six yards on second down, and Turner converts to Edwards on third down to move the chains. Hurry-up is in effect. Can the Bruins keep up? 12:34 AM ETHouston begins the half with a false start, then Turner nearly gets picked off on first-and-15. 12:32 AM ETCarrier gets cracked on the kick-off. Houston takes over on the field, minus Case Keenum. 12:30 AM ETPrince hangs onto the ball for waaaaaaaay too long and gets taken down for a sack. Forbath punches through a 42-yard field goal to put the Bruins up, 24-3. 12:28 AM ETThe return of Stone-Hands, this time by Taylor Embree in the end zone. 12:27 AM ETBruins keep it on the ground, with a couple of solid runs by Franklin and a nice scamper by Prince. 12:25 AM ETFranklin skis up the middle for nine yards on first down. He's got some great burst to go along with the patience of a veteran. 12:24 AM ETPrince starts off the second half with a quick hand-off to Franklin and a nice toss to Rosario for the first down. Bruins already into Cougar territory. 12:23 AM ETBack in action for the second half. Cougs kick the ball out of bounds, so the Bruins, once again, get fantastic field position to start. Let's see if UCLA can keep the good times rollin'. 12:04 AM ETTurner takes a knee to end the half. UCLA goes into the half with a surprising 21-3 lead. On the one hand, UCLA should be up more, if not for a couple of turnovers deep in Houston territory. On the other hand, the Bruins' D hasn't exactly shut down the Cougars' attack, surrendering 213 yards in the first half but getting rescued by Moore and Ayers on picks. The offense has looked pretty good, thanks in large part to Kevin Prince, but the defense is going to have to be stingier in the second half, lest it tire out and allow Houston's potent passing attack to catch fire. 12:00 AM ETThat is, until Prince sails the ball over the six-foot-five and gets picked off. 19 seconds until half time. 11:59 PM ETAnother quick first down on a throw to Taylor Detroit Lions
Embree, 44 seconds to go. Kai Forbath is warming up on the sidelines, but there's certainly enough time for a trip to the end zone here. 11:59 PM ETDamien Thigpen on the reverse, picks up 21 yards and gets out of bounds to save the clock. Simple, but effective. 50 second til the half. 11:58 PM ETThird-and-fifteen for the Blue and Gold, and Jet Ski picks up the first down on an 18-yard draw play. Great job by the O-line opening up some great running lanes for Franklin. 11:56 PM ETJones gets the ball again, gets another loss. Jones tried to cut it outside, but he's much more of an inside runner, doesn't exactly have the speed to break it to the outside. 11:55 PM ETFirst down at the 33 for the Bruins, but Jones gets taken down in the backfield for a two-yard loss, setting up second-and-12. 11:54 PM ETTurner misfires on third-and-seven. Bruins will get the ball back with less than three minutes until the half. Let's see if UCLA can do something with it... 11:53 PM ETOn second down, Turner hangs on to the ball long enough for freshman linebacker Jordan Zumwalt to shed his blocker and take him down for a sack. Nice job by the youngster. 11:53 PM ETCotton Turner in for Keenum, hands the ball off to Hayes on his first snap for a six-yard gain. 11:51 PM ETFirst down, the freshman Jones rumbles, stumbles, and then fumbles it away to the Cougars. Bruins D comes back on the field after getting pushed around on Houston's previous drive, but at least they get a little extra breath thanks to a Houston time-out. 11:49 PM ETOy, looks like a knee injury for Keenum, goes down a bit weird. He's up and putting some pressure on it. Here's hoping he can come back and play. 11:48 PM ETFirst-and-goal for Houston, Keenum gets picked off by Akeem Ayers, who takes it back inside the 30! Woooooooooow! Meanwhile, Case Keenum is shaken up on the field, again in pursuit of an interceptor. 11:45 PM ETKeenum runs it deep into Bruin territory to the two. Poor tackling, anybody? Keenum's not exactly a burner on the turf. 11:43 PM ETBruins get pressure on Keenum, who gets the ball away too high to his running back in the flat but sticks around for a personal foul on UCLA. Bullet 1, foot zero. 11:41 PM ETCougs pick up a penalty for first-and-15. Keenum overthrows Edwards on first down, but his man had the step. 11:40 PM ETSecond-and-20 for the Cougs, Keenum makes a nice throw on the run to Carrier to set up a third-and-15. Bruins D has to deliver here to keep mo' on its side. 11:39 PM ETGood pressure by the Bruins, but Keenum gets Green Bay Packers jersey
the ball off...thanks to a holding call on his offense line. 11:38 PM ETIn and out of Tyron Carrier's hands on first down, hung in the air for a bit, but no Blue-and-Gold was there to pick it up. 11:37 PM ETExcellent coverage by Tobi Umodu on the kick-off, bringing down Houston's Carrier at the 20. 11:34 PM ETFranklin is rewarded for his work with an easy touchdown scamper to put UCLA up, 21-3. Is anyone else surprised? Something tells me Houston coach Kevin Sumlin wouldn't say he's surprised, and neither would Neuheisel. 11:33 PM ETFranklin sure is getting some work tonight, picking up the first down and giving the Bruins a first-and-goal at the two. 11:33 PM ETCory Harkey gets his first catch of the game, eight yards. Bruins have second and two inside the 10. 11:32 PM ETFranklin gets another carry and picks up the first down and then some. The O-line is getting some good push against Houston's front seven. 11:31 PM ETGreat catch-and-run by Jet Ski on first down, breaking out of a tackle and getting the Bruins back in the red zone. UCLA is three-for-three in the red zone this year, picking up touchdowns each time. Just short of the first, but second and short ain't bad. Watch for a quick strike. 11:28 PM ETMarvray's hands go cold, but Bruins get a first down on a roughing-the-passer call against Houston. Whatever keeps the chains moving. 11:26 PM ETThird-and-six for the Cougars, Keenum throws, ball skips off his receiver's hands and is picked off by...you guessed it...Rahim Moore. His first pick of the year, and he brings the ball back 42 yards. Way to bail out the D, Rahim. 11:24 PM ETRahim Moore picks up a horse-collar penalty, giving Houston another 15 yards. C'mon, man! 11:24 PM ETBeall goes straight up the gut on first down for eight yards, follows that up with another solid run for a Houston first down. Cougars are in hurry-up mode. UCLA better keep up. 11:23 PM ETHouston takes the ball out of the end zone on the kick, gets the ball out to about the 20, then the Bruins pick up a late hit out of bounds.
